Domain Name Registration
A domain name is the address your visitors will type to get to your Web site.
The domain name is very important to the success of your Web site. It can help with your Search Engine Optimization and a memorable domain name will make sure it stays in your visitors minds.
There are a few things to keep in mind:
- First things first; the domain name has to be available. Web sites like Whois.SC can do searches on available domain names for free.
- Domain names should be short, and easy to say to your customers. It should be easy for them to remember they can type it in hours later, without writing it down.
Names are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you foresee a name you may want to use in the future, secure the name as soon as possible. Sometimes domain names are sold from one organization to another for various reasons such as a company name change. Letters of permission are sometimes required from the old owner to give control to the new owner.
Two terms to know in reference to domain names are the first- and second-level address of a Web site. The top or first-level destination is the domain extension such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .gov, .edu, etc. The second-level is the addition of your site name preceding the extension. Most businesses still prefer to use .com because it is the most widely known and usually the first searched when someone is guessing at a site name. As these prime names become exhausted more extensions will become more popular. Some extensions are for particular organizations only such as .gov for government and .edu for educational institutions.
